There’s something you should know before choosing it for your wedding day: Lost Gulch is beautiful—and also extremely popular. If you want any sort of privacy, we recommend getting married here at sunrise. After photographing elopements throughout the Boulder area, we sincerely believe in choosing a location based on the experience you want and not to focus solely on imagining specific photographs.

Is Lost Gulch Overlook Right for Your Elopement?

Here’s the part every couple should know before choosing Lost Gulch Overlook to exchange vows.

It is popular. Really popular.

The City of Boulder currently classifies visitation at Lost Gulch as high, with more than 200 average visits per day, and the parking lot has just 24 standard spaces.

That means your dreamy mountain overlook may also include hikers, tourists, photographers, other couples, and people simply stopping by to take in the view. You don’t get exclusive use of the Overlook.

If you are set on getting married here, the only time to do it is sunrise. Even then, there will likely be other people there, though not in the overwhelming numbers like there can be throughout the day (particularly at sunset).

The rocky viewing area is also relatively small and uneven, which makes it difficult to create much separation from other visitors. If your vision is to stand somewhere completely alone in nature with your partner, Lost Gulch isn’t the location we’d recommend for your ceremony.

And that’s okay! One of our favorite ways to use Lost Gulch is to get married somewhere quieter and then come here for portraits. You get the incredible views without asking the Overlook to be something it isn’t.

Lost Gulch Overlook Wedding & Elopement Permits

Permit rules at Lost Gulch can be confusing, so in order to proceed, check the current City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) regulations before your date.

The City currently states that weddings, ceremonies, elopements, and other stationary events on OSMP lands are only permitted at designated shelters and facilities. Lost Gulch is a public overlook rather than a reservable ceremony facility.

Commercial photography is a separate matter. Because we are professional photographers charging for our services on OSMP land, we are required to carry a Commercial Use Permit.

We keep up with the permitting requirements so you don’t have to become an expert in Boulder municipal regulations just to get married! 😉

Always verify current ceremony rules directly with OSMP before planning a stationary wedding ceremony at Lost Gulch.

How Much Does a Lost Gulch Overlook Elopement Cost?

Lost Gulch Overlook elopement costs can be relatively simple compared with a traditional wedding because there isn’t a traditional venue rental fee.

You’ll want to budget for your marriage license, photography, any applicable photography permits or parking fees, travel, and any additional vendors or experiences you choose to include.

If you hire us, we handle the applicable photography permit so you don’t have to navigate that piece on your own.

How Many People Can You Have at a Lost Gulch Overlook Elopement?

While OSMP commercial permits can accommodate groups of up to 16 under the limited permit rules, we don’t recommend bringing a large group to Lost Gulch.

The physical overlook is small, parking is limited, and the location is already heavily visited. If you’re planning a true Lost Gulch elopement, we recommend to keep it just the two of you.

If you want to celebrate with family & friends, there are much better Boulder-area locations for a ceremony with guests. We can help you find one that gives everyone room to breathe.

When Is the Best Time to Elope at Lost Gulch?

Sunrise! Sunrise! Sunrise! 🌄

If privacy is even remotely important to you, sunrise is the only time for your Lost Gulch Overlook elopement. The overlook is much quieter early in the morning, and watching first light spill across the mountains creates an incredibly peaceful start to your day.

For the best chance at a quieter experience, choose:

  • Sunrise
  • Tuesday–Thursday
  • Early Spring, late Fall, or Winter
  • Avoid major holidays and peak summer weekends

Sunset is undeniably beautiful here, but it is also one of the most popular times to visit. The City specifically describes Lost Gulch as a common sunrise and sunset destination and recommends arriving early because parking is limited. So if you really want to visit at sunset, go during the week in Spring, late Fall, or Winter.

Remember that public land never guarantees privacy. Even at sunrise, other adventurous groups might also be there.

Because Lost Gulch sits on Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks land, protecting the landscape is part of having an elopement here.

Keep these important rules in mind:

  • Stay on designated trails and durable surfaces.
  • Practice Leave No Trace.
  • Do not pick or trample wildflowers.
  • No setup of arches, chairs, structures, or elaborate decorations.
  • No drones on OSMP lands.
  • Dogs must remain on a hand-held leash in the Lost Gulch area.
  • Do not block roads, parking areas, or trails.
  • Never leave flowers, confetti, seeds, rice, or other materials behind.

OSMP rules prohibit damaging or collecting natural objects, including wildflowers and native plants, and Lost Gulch has specific leash requirements for dogs.

And honestly? We love it this way. The landscape is the decoration.

Because Boulder Open Space and Mountain Park’s current regulations restrict stationary wedding ceremonies to designated shelters and facilities, couples should confirm directly with OSMP before planning a ceremony at Lost Gulch. A better option may be to hold your ceremony at a permitted Boulder venue or facility and visit Lost Gulch for portraits.

The overlook includes uneven terrain, and portions of the area can be difficult to navigate for wheelchair users. If accessibility is vital for your guests, we recommend other Boulder locations.

Lost Gulch Overlook is accessible year-round, and winter can be absolutely magical when the mountains are covered in snow. For the nicest weather & conditions, spring and fall are great times for a Lost Gulch Overlook elopement.

Lost Gulch Overlook is located at 4300 Flagstaff Road, 3.8 miles up the winding road from Boulder. The road is paved with a low speed limit and takes about 11 minutes to drive.

The City currently lists the trailhead as open from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily, although seasonal or weather-related closures can occur.

There are 24 standard parking spaces at the overlook, and parking requires a fee. Because the lot is small and the location is popular, arrive extra early and never park along the roadway.
