Things to do in Grand Lake & Grand County
Nestled at the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park in Grand County, Grand Lake is your alpine playground where every season offers magic. In warmer months, rent a boat at Grand Lake Marina and drift gently across Colorado’s largest natural lake. For an adventurous ride on land, saddle up for horseback riding through aspens and expansive alpine meadows. In winter, Grand Lake transforms into Colorado’s unofficial snowmobiling capital, with over 300 miles of groomed trails accessible right from outfitter rentals like On The Trail or Grand Adventures. When snow blankets the peaks, ski Winter Park Resort for alpine thrills. Then, wrap up your day with a stroll through the cozy downtown area.
When To Elope at Grand Lake
Located at 8,439 feet above sea level, Grand Lake has different seasonality than areas at much lower elevations. If you’re looking for the warmest weather to enjoy water activities, the best dates are in July & August. For winter activities such as snowmobiling & skiing, January-March are ideal. During the spring months of April, May, & June, there will be increasingly melting snow, and the lake begins to thaw.
It’s important to be mindful of Trail Ridge Road – this route connects Grand Lake to Estes Park via Rocky Mountain National Park. So if you’d like to visit Estes Park, plan your trip between early June and mid-October.

Grand Lake Elopement Locations

Grand Lake Dock + Shore at Point Park
Point Park is a gorgeous space to get married right on the shore of Grand Lake! This wooden dock extends onto the water and features stunning views of the Rockies. You can either have your ceremony on the dock or the shoreline along the lake. To access this dock, it is a 0.25 mile walk along a paved path. This site no longer accepts reservations, and the space is available first come, first served. For the best lighting, we suggest a sunrise or early afternoon ceremony at this location. Parking is limited at this location. Additionally, this site has covered picnic tables & vault toilets.

Lake Granby
Lake Granby is a spectacularly large blue lake with expansive mountain views of Rocky Mountain National Park. There are many access points to the lake shore where you can have your ceremony(many are designated picnic areas or overlooks). Ceremonies are allowed as long as you are respectful, clean up after yourselves, and are on Arapaho + Roosevelt National Forest land. If you need assistance finding the perfect Lake Granby wedding location, please reach out and we will suggest sites.

Monarch Lake
If you are looking to go somewhere more wild, Monarch Lake is the perfect ceremony site! This lake is surrounded by pine covered forests with stark rocky peaks in the distance. It’s about 40 minutes from downtown Grand Lake and a short walk from the parking area to the main shore. The shore is small and parking is limited so we recommend keeping your group size to no more than 12 people total. You also have the option to explore the 4 mile loop around Monarch Lake and have your ceremony along the way if you are eloping without guests.

Adams Falls
A unique place to visit in Grand Lake is Adams Falls, which features a waterfall and peaceful forest with stunning views. Adams Falls is located within Rocky Mountain National Park. You cannot have your ceremony here, but you can explore the area for photos. These falls are one of the most visited areas of Grand Lake, so be sure to visit during quieter times of the day such as sunrise or sunset.

Additional Mountain Locations
There are so many incredible locations for your Grand Lake and Grand County elopement, many of which are lesser known. There are high alpine lakes, mountain top trails, and wild areas to explore. With nearly a decade of photographing in Colorado, we can suggest some of these lesser known, off-the-beaten-path options.
Grand Lake + Rocky Mountain National Park
Located just outside Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake also offers the unique opportunity to get married inside the national park. There are two ceremony sites located on the Grand Lake side that are logistically the best options if you are staying in Grand Lake/ Lake County. These sites must be reserved through the National Park, which you can learn more about in our RMNP guide. Keep in mind you can also drive along Trail Ridge Road for photos during it’s open season.
Grand Lake & Grand County Marriage License
To obtain your marriage license in Grand Lake and the surrounding area, you must make an appointment at the Grand County Clerk & Recorders office. You and your partner must both be present to pick up your license at the office in Hot Sulphur Springs, which is about 30 minutes from Grand Lake. This license can be taken to your elopement, signed, and returned to the office. For more information on obtaining your marriage license in Grand County, please visit their office website.
