Chautauqua Park Elopement + Wedding Guide
Why Elope at Chautauqua Park
If you dream of saying your vows with the dramatic Boulder Flatirons rising behind you, a Chautauqua Park elopement might be the perfect spot. Nestled at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and just minutes from downtown Boulder, this location gives you iconic Colorado mountain views — no long drives or strenuous hikes required.
Chautauqua Park combines easy access, epic backdrops, and timeless charm. It’s perfect for couples who want a natural setting that feels wild, yet is close to the heart of Boulder’s vibrant culture.
Fun facts: Chautauqua is a Haudenosaunee word with multiple meanings and describes the shape of New York’s Chautauqua Lake: “two moccasins tied together.” Also, our very first date was hiking these same trails over ten years ago!

Chautauqua Park Wedding Ceremony Permits
Elopements Without Guests
If you’re eloping with just the two of you (and your photographers 😉), you can exchange your vows along the trails as long as your photographer holds a valid Open Space & Mountain Parks (OSMP) photography permit. You’ll need to follow all park rules, which include staying on designated trails, respecting restoration areas, and keeping pathways open for other visitors.
Weddings with Guests
If your celebration includes 50-100 guests, you’ll need to reserve one of the designated ceremony sites or picnic shelters managed by Boulder’s OSMP. We also recommend reserving a space even for smaller groups because it ensures privacy and prevents overlapping events.
Ceremony permits are booked in 4-hour time slots between the hours of 8 AM – 5 PM, and requests can be made up to one year in advance.
A popular choice is the Chautauqua Lawn, which offers sweeping mountain views and the option to set up decorations like arches and chairs. For receptions, you can rent the Chautauqua Community House or Dining Hall nearby — a cozy and convenient spot to celebrate after your ceremony.
👉 Learn more and apply for your permit on the City of Boulder’s official website.
Chautauqua Park Photography Permit
Professional photographers are required to hold an OSMP photo permit to take pictures beyond the lawn, especially on the trails & meadows with Flatiron views.

How Many Guests Can I Have For My Chautauqua Park Elopement?
You can host up to 100 guests for your Chautauqua Park wedding. Because parking is limited, we suggest organizing carpools or hiring a shuttle to make it easy for guests to arrive together.

When to Get Married at Chautauqua Park
Chautauqua Park is open year-round, and each season has its own charm:
- Spring: Wildflowers in full bloom — a fairytale setting.
- Summer: Lush meadows + golden light, but expect crowds.
- Fall: Crisp air and warm tones as the leaves change.
- Winter: Snowy serenity with breathtaking views of frost-kissed Flatirons.
As one of the most popular places to visit, Chautauqua Park can be extremely busy (especially on the weekends). For more privacy, we recommend planning for a weekday elopement. If you prefer even more privacy, sunrise on a weekday is your best bet (the alpine glow cast upon the flat irons is stunning)!
Tips for Getting Married at Chautauqua Park

📜 Get a permit, even if you think you don’t need one. It’ll help avoid any interruptions on your elopement day.
🥾 Explore the trails! From the Flatirons Trail to Royal Arch, there’s endless beauty to explore. Many couples love saying their vows mid-hike for a spontaneous & intimate moment.
📸 Hire a local photographer (hey, that’s us 😉)! We know the light patterns, weather, and best hidden gems. Also, if for some reason we needed a backup plan, we can quickly adapt & adjust on the fly.
Chautauqua Park Parking + Accessibility
The Chautauqua Park Trailhead has a paid parking lot and limited street parking. It’s a popular spot year-round, so arrive early to secure a spot. For larger gatherings, carpooling or hiring a shuttle is essential. The Lawn at Chautauqua Park is flat and a short walk to reach from the parking area, which makes it a great location for couples wanting easy access for their guests. The meadow and trails leading up and through the Flatirons vary in difficultly; the main trail up is paved but does have an incline and may be challenging for those coming from low elevation or with any hiking restrictions.
Lodging at Chautauqua Park
The Chautauqua Park Cabins at the base of the Flatirons make for a lovely overnight stay! Wake up, sip your coffee, and simply walk straight to your ceremony site. The larger cabins can even host small dinners & receptions.
