14er Elopement at Mount Bierstadt

14er Elopement Tips
Having a 14er elopement is a feat that requires careful preparation and respect for the mountain environment. With a total of 58 peaks soaring above 14,000 feet in Colorado, each one offers its own unique challenges and rewards. We recommend hiking the mountain you prefer at least once to familiarize yourself with the trail, understand your abilities, and learn about how much time you will need.
For any 14er elopement, starting early is imperative to avoid crowds and to coordinate with the weather. Generally speaking, the weather is prone to change quickly as the day wears on, so a sunrise start is the best way to plan. Layer lightweight clothing to help you stay comfortable in fluctuating temperatures. Wear sturdy hiking boots with good traction and support. Remember, not all 14ers are the same – some will require more hours than others.
Mount Bierstadt Elopement Trail
Always stay on the designated Mount Bierstadt trail during your elopement to preserve the delicate alpine ecosystem. The high alpine environment is incredibly harsh, and the vegetation you find endures extreme weather conditions such as high winds, heavy snow, and intense sun exposure.
Stepping off trail or trampling patches of vegetation can have devastating consequences. Life above the tree-line takes a very long time to grow, as these slow-growing plants work tirelessly for their survival. As a defense mechanism, they’ve learned to stunt their own growth. To stay warm they’ve developed have hair-like structures to trap heat and pigmented flowers, which convert light into heat. You can read more here!
What to Bring on a 14er Elopement
We’ve got you covered on what to bring on a 14er elopement! Of course, rings, vow books, and anything else you would like that’s related to your ceremony like flowers, marriage license and a pen are important. It is absolutely essential that you bring sunscreen, lots of water, and snacks to provide energy along the way. Hiking poles can provide stability and support, especially on steep or uneven terrain, making them a valuable accessory for your journey. For those less experienced with high-altitude hiking, consider bringing oxygen cans to compensate for the lack of O2 in the air. They are lightweight and can help alleviate altitude sickness more quickly. Lastly, headlamps are critical when hiking without the sun.
